Job Description

We're expanding our remote educational support team to include a skilled Sign Language Interpreter serving deaf and hard of hearing students throughout Michigan's virtual learning programs. This position combines advanced interpreting skills with innovative technology to ensure educational accessibility.

Role Details

This remote position encompasses 35.5 hours per week providing interpreting services for approximately 15-20 students across elementary through high school grade levels. You'll facilitate communication access through virtual platforms while supporting inclusive educational experiences for deaf and hard of hearing learners.

Primary Interpreting Duties

  • Provide real-time ASL interpretation during virtual classroom instruction and educational activities
  • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and educational team members
  • Interpret for virtual IEP meetings, parent conferences, and administrative consultations
  • Collaborate with deaf education teachers and related service providers
  • Adapt interpreting techniques for effective online delivery and visual clarity
  • Support student participation in virtual extracurricular and social activities
  • Maintain professional interpreting ethics and confidentiality standards

Educational Support Focus

Your interpreting services will support students across diverse academic subjects including core curriculum areas, specialized instruction, and related services. You'll work with students who use various communication modalities and may require additional visual supports for optimal learning access.

Essential Qualifications

  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher (required)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience providing educational interpreting services in school settings
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and strong English language skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret effectively in virtual learning environments
  • Knowledge of deaf culture, educational terminology, and age-appropriate language adaptation
  • Strong professional ethics and commitment to interpreting standards
  • Reliable technology setup with high-quality video capabilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIPA score of 4.0 or higher
  • Written EIPA certification
  • RID/NIC national certification with written examination
  • Experience with online learning platforms and virtual classroom management
  • Background in educational interpreting across multiple grade levels

Technology Requirements

Candidates must have experience with video conferencing platforms and the ability to provide clear visual interpretation through online mediums. A professional workspace with appropriate lighting, camera positioning, and stable internet connection is essential for effective interpreting services.
