Position Summary
Pilots, aircrew, and special-duty operators face extreme environments during their missions. As a Flight Surgeon for the U.S. Air Force, you will serve as the primary care physician to these exceptional Airmen. You will also lead a dedicated team of specialized professionals to develop, manage, and implement preventive healthcare practices that ensure our Airmen are always ready to fly.

Job Responsibilities

Career Tasks for Flight Surgeons:

  • Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews
  • Assess fitness for flying and special duties, and evaluate environments to identify health hazards
  • Regularly participate in flying missions to observe and address aeromedical issues
  • Develop and manage preventive medicine programs while educating flight personnel on healthy lifestyles
  • Establish procedures for managing casualties from aviation incidents and other emergencies
  • Provide advice on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards
  • Act as a liaison between flying squadrons and medical services

Qualifications

To be considered, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • MD/DO degree with completion of a U.S. residency at a fully accredited program and current board certification in a primary care specialty (e.g., family, emergency, pediatrics, internal medicine)
  • Submission of proof of primary care privileges for the 12 months leading up to commissioning
  • Completion of a flight physical (USAF Flying Class II)
  • Completion of the Aerospace Medicine Primary (AMP) course (approximately nine weeks)
  • Successful completion of eight-week Officer Training School
  • U.S. citizenship, aged between 18 and 47
  • Willingness to relocate

Working Hours

Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM
All Federal Holidays off; compensation may be provided for any Federal Holidays worked.
